California Burning

The weather across the continental United States is just plain flipping out. Southern California is burning and as of the last time I looked at the news [at past 2pm US EDT], there had been around 1,000 homes already burned down and thousands more threatened. Malibu is burning, yes, tita kasama ang bahay ng artista sa naevacuate [yes aunty, there are several celebrity houses included in the mandatory evacuation], just not sure whose burned down. The winds are not helping either, as hurricane gusts wind sweeps through the San Diego county and Lake Arrowhead area.

California is supposed to have had the last two years - 2006 & 2007 - as the driest years on record and fire officials had predicted wildfires but not quite this big, with hundreds of thousands of people needed to be told to leave their homes.

Down South in Georgia, they are quarreling over water. Georgia wants to shut off water flowing downstream to Alabama and Louisiana to save their own state from going dry. As it is, they only have approximately +/- 90 days of water supply. The kicker, the local government is so desperate to conserve water that inspectors are going around neighborhoods and heaven forbid if anyone has a green lawn or a healthier lawn than their neighbors. Their water will be shut off. Kaput. Sorry. You’ll have to pay the fine if you want it restored. $1000 if you want it next day or you can opt not to take a bath and buy bottled water for drinking if you want to just fork out the regular $25 which would restore your connection in probably a week or two.

Waaaah. What if the poor family just happened to have good soil and the great grass? My aunt was just telling me a few weeks ago that fall has come early in Minnesota and the leaves have started to turn and fall as early as September … and a lot of Americans still think Global Warming is just a fact of life … a myth created by rocker Gore [presumably to win his Nobel Prize?].

And even those who believe in Global Warming … I wonder how many toilet paper, plastic cups, paper plates and plastic bottles they’ve been using everyday? Oh and what kinds of cars do they happen to drive .. AND how many cigarettes are they puffing …

Thank god I’m Asian and used to using the “tabo” [water dipper] =)
