I’ve been hearing and reading about these twitter folks twittering to each other. Never one for following trends, I just jumped on the Twitter wagon a day ago and for the life of me I CAN’T F-ING UNDERSTAND WHAT THE H I’M SUPPOSED TO DO THERE except post updates of 140 characters or less and hope to the high heavens somebody discover you and follow you around as you do a running commentary of your life.
So PLEASE, can anybody who’s been twittering explain to me in plain english how I can make the most of this seemingly wonderful internet sensation?

I actually have a Twitter account too, but I find it very limiting and …boring. I would rather visit good blogs like this one and read what you have been doing.

I have one of the widgets from twitter set on my personal blog, so when I “twitter” when I’m away from home (text message from my phone) it posts to my blog’s sidebar under “Twitter”. It allows me to make brilliant comments like “Wow, there’s a line outside and it’s 11 degrees! Brrr!” or “Hmmm, Guinness or whiskey, which shall I chose?” and then 5 minutes later text: “Both!” You can see the sidebar widget in action in one of its forms on Wil Wheaton’s blog, on the right hand side bar if you scroll down a bit: http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/
I also use it as a quick in-touch tool for some friends of mine who live across the country from me.
But unless you have other friends using it, or love the idea of posting short (funny?) updates to your site from your phone, its usefulness may be limited. Check out the twitter pages of Wil Wheaton [sorry to use him twice, but I know he uses it, heh], Xeni Jardin, or Warren Ellis for some ideas on how they use it (they all use foul language, in case that bothers you, but it will still give you the idea).
If you get enough of your friends on it, you can have the twitters sent directly to your cell, to get them as while you’re out and about. (You can set your preferences on people individually — so you can follow tons of people but only have one or two of them sent directly to your phone.) I haven’t bothered with this feature yet, I’m happy to read up from the computer instead.
Sorry to prattle on so long, but I hope I’ve been some help. Good luck!
