Eat Up!

There I was blog hopping and came across Baked Blog and her post, Eat Your Food. I could hear a mental groan. A big one. It’s one of those scenes I hope won’t be a mainstay in my son’s toddler years.

At eight months, the baby is getting to be so active that mealtimes can be trying, specially if it’s the hubba giving him his food. He gets frustrated, I just play along. Crustini wants to play, we play, but he knows that as long as his bib is on, it’s eating time. Sometimes he tries to take them off, but mommy’s wiser, I have one of those wearable bibs that he can’t take off. he alternates between eating his rattle, cyberducky, mr. cupcake or his toe with spoonfuls of solid food or milk.

I remember a time when my parents used to tell me to eat my food and finish what’s on my plate. Yep, I’m on the “Finish Your Plate” club. Sorta. I hated vegetable when I was a kid. With a Passion. So much so that it was a battle of the fittest with my dad most of the time. One night, I wouldn’t eat my veggies as usual, so he firmly told my mom I’m not leaving the table until I eat my plate clean. And that’s that. Or so he thought.

I sat there crying, looking miserable for what felt like hours. My mom was begging me to please take a bite and I just sat there giving her accusatory looks. My dad finally relented and lectured me on the values of eating the right kind of food. Hah. I won.

My parents used to say they hope my child never gets to be as stubborn as I am.

They tried to train me to switch to a sippy cup at 4 years old [yes, I'm red in the face!] and my mom stored away my baby bottles out of sight in the top cupboard. Or so she thought.

I climbed up the shelves, took them down, poured buckets of formula and water til it tasted right and off to play with my cousins I went.

Now I have a son. My dad’s probably rubbing his hands together in Heaven in glee and anticipation. Gaaaaah. Payback.

My little boy is four. And I kid you not, he would only eat maybe four different foods over the last three years. Every morning he drinks Pedia Sure to get his nutrients.

However, about a month ago he decided he wanted to try new foods. And the plan was he had to eat four bites since he is four years old.

My child, who wouldn’t even sniff a piece of meat has now eaten and enjoyed grilled chicken and steak! And to make it even better he now knows he likes snow peas, carrots and water chestnuts. Though the asparagus nearly made him vomit. I think I can deal with him not eating the asparagus. =o)

At least your parents said they hope your baby isn’t as stubborn as you. My mom used to give us the eye and say one day you will have a kid just like you and then you will know what I am talking about. I don’t know if my son is just like me when i was a kid, but I do know my sister has a daughter who is just like her, and we both joke and laugh that mom put a curse on us and it worked.

I hope you don’t have to go through this and your baby will eat like a pro when he is a toddler, but sadly I know this probably won’t happen. I think every child has a problem with eating at least one thing and will cause a scene if made to try that food. Still as parents it is our job to make sure our kids eat right and healthy and what not and understand the importance of food.

    Take care Maria!
