The Little Lightbulb That Could

Have you seen the LA times [or Boing Boing] story of late about the light bulb that’s been burning for well on a hundred years? How’s that for an awesome moment?

This lightbulb has never been turned off since 1901, well, except for that one time when the fire department had to move house and they would rather cut off the hanging wire than unscrew this four-watt wonder.

The curlicue carbon filament was produced by the now defunct Shelby Electric Co., and many believe that the longevity of the lightbulb can be attributed to its airtight seal and some also believe that it’s because the lightbulb has continued to burn for 107 years.

Just imagine, in this day and age when everyone is being amazed by high tech lasers and energy efficient lighting, there’s a tiny lightbulb in California which has a backup generator and a surge protector attracting so much awe and respect. Beats those uber fancy light bulbs that you blink and had to replace.

Go check it out and see for yourself why you should be awed.
