Prop Me Not

When socialspark first came out I was actually excited to try it out. But lately, I’m getting just a tad paranoid to login and check my messages. I should be happy as I regularly receive friend requests, at least I know people check me out and find my profile and blogs good enough to want to be my friends.

It’s the “props” that kills me. If you’re a PPP/SocialSpark member, you’d know what I mean. Bloggers have the ability to give each other “props” or “drops”. Well and good, I’m sure the feature was implemented with only the best intentions.

But …  and here is where it gets awkward. So I get a friend request in the mail. Oh goody! Nice to know other people yeah, there’s room for more in this online social networking community lah. I hit “Accept” and voila, my network has just increased.

Then I get a follow up message that goes something like : thanks for accepting my friend request. I gave you a prop, now can you please go to my profile xxxx and give me one too. Ads pay the bill so make sure you visit my ads …

I feel like I’m in a stick-up situation. Hands up! Give me your props or else!

I am grateful for the props, but seriously, please, prop me up if you really think my blog and what I write is awesome. Otherwise, I would still grant your friend request [unless you're a cyber stalker] and I’d be happy to come visit your blog and read if it interests me. Just without strings attached.

So what would you do if you receive such a request? Now I feel like if I login to socialspark, it’s as if I’m pushed to a corner …  I GAVE YOU A PROP, YOU’RE OBLIGED TO GIVE ME ONE. I WANT IT!

Erm. Sorry, but no thanks. I’d give the props back if I can.

its the ame problem with every blogging network. this may sound harsh, but i ignore it. i add everyone back, cause im nice like that, but i dont let myself force into a situation where they ask me to exchange votes or rss subscriptions etc with them. i dont “buy” readers that way, and definitely noone can buy me.
of course you have to be nice with your readers, but they are not genuine readers anyway.

Maria says: Not at all harsh. I add everyone who wants to be added, the prop thing just kinda threw me off. But yes, for the most part I ignore them (except when I blog about them. bleh)
