Amid speculations of “laglagan” (betrayal) on their respective political campaign partners, Senator Benigno Aquino III, only son of the late President Corazon Aquino has just been proclaimed the next President of the Republic of the Philippines and former Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay as the incoming Vice President.
I didn’t vote for either of them, but I do wish them well. It is unrealistic for anybody to expect that these two men will be able to clean up the Philippine’s vast array of problems but let’s hope they can at least (at face value) put some dent to some of the problems plaguing the country.
Superficial as it may be, if Noynoy and/or Binay can lift the country’s international image, it will actually be a huge step forward. Corruption will never end, Noynoy will come and go and corruption will stay, it’s deeply rooted in the Filipino psyche, not just the people working in government. Call me cynical but the truth is, Noynoy is not Cory, nor is he Ninoy. He’s this quiet, man in the background kind of guy who is trying to carry on the torch his parents left behind. Let’s hope he will leave a good mark in his presidency.
