A new search engine launched Monday. So what you might say, there’s like a gazillion search engines launching everyday anyway. But not everyone has a not-so-secret weapon : former Google employees.

Google has always maintained that competition is great. Hey, they can very well afford to be magnanimous since they’re, as a CNN anchorperson puts it, an 800-lb gorilla. But Google has never before had to face competition from its former employees. Hmmnnn, does that mean it might just be able to approximate Google godness? Maybe. Then again, maybe not.

Anyway, so far I think it’s a funky search engine. Results are displayed in either two or three column layout with pictures and description. Related categories are also listed on the right, plus in some instances, they have tabbed results.

The one thing I noticed is that returned results list the most relevant sites instead of just listing everything including those spammy web sites - e.g., you search for a local guest house and national hotel booking chains show up because they included virtually every city and town in the world as their keyword without really having any available hotel in that area.

I’m not a geek so I’m just letting you know what’s new in town. For more in-depth reviews you can go here and here.

Next Week is PAN MASS, a bike-a-thon charity event hoping to raise funds for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. The PAN MASS starts from Sturbridge and ends in Provincetown. Another athletic fund raising event coming to Provincetown this September is the Swim For Life event at the Provincetown benefitting AIDS and Women’s Health.

There is one event, which is not happening in Provincetown (the nearest memory walk is in Plymouth) but is dear to me is the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk happening this fall. It is the nation’s largest event creating awareness and raising funds to fight Alzheimer’s Disease. I have blogged about this previously, with my maternal grandfather suffering from it and at the time, there is very little awareness about this condition.
